Save Money – and Your Marriage

Winter- Ready Homes: 8 Tips for Canterbury Residents

When it comes to home renovations, it’s not just your budget at risk – it could be your relationship too. That’s why engaging an interior designer from the outset isn’t just smart, it’s essential.

“Designers should really take a few psychology papers,” laughs Kelly Gammie of Rarebirds Interiors. “We’re not just helping clients choose fittings and finishes, we’re often mediating between two very different visions of a dream home.”

With over 25 years of experience, Kelly has helped countless couples navigate the emotional and financial stress of major renovations. “Early engagement with a designer can help avoid the friction that often happens on site. We ask the tough questions before the build begins, and that saves time, money, and yes, quite a few relationships.” Changes made mid-project are one of the biggest budget busters. “If you’ve already started building and you suddenly want a different layout or materials, you’re doubling up on labour and delays,” says Kelly. “But if you’ve made those decisions upfront with someone knowledgeable guiding you through them, everything flows much smoother.”

She and her business partner, Sean Monk bring a balance of emotional insight and decision-making confidence to every project. “I’m good at firm calls, Sean’s great with emotional support,” she says. “It’s a great yin and yang. We’ve worked with clients on projects for up to three years, and you need trust, honesty, and a bit of humour to get through that.”

Whether you’re doing a single room or an entire rebuild, having a designer involved from the start isn’t an extra – it’s almost a safeguard. “And if you want your project – and your marriage – to survive,” says Kelly, “don’t leave it ‘til after the trades have started .”
