A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Home

Winter- Ready Homes: 8 Tips for Canterbury Residents

For many people one of the most satisfying things in life is coming home to a clean and sanitized home. Every year most households do some type of ‘spring cleaning’. For some its a basic ‘sort through and chuck out’ and others it means cleaning from top to bottom. Here are some spring cleaning tips to freshen up your home from the team at Premium Cleaning Services.

Planning

It can be time-consuming, and even more so if you start to clean without a plan, you might even accidentally leave something out, or move from task to task before fully finishing one before the other, only having to backtrack or double up. A lack of planning when Spring Cleaning may actually add time to your clean if you aren’t doing it efficiently, you will be thinking rather than scrubbing.

Cabinets

After some time, dirt build up on your kitchen cupboards is inevitable especially if you don’t always turn on the exhaust hood when you cook. Grime is a mixture of grease and dust that builds up in our cabinets. To remove grease, create a solution with 50% vinegar and 50% warm water. Pour into a spray bottle and mist on the cabinets. Let the solution sit for a minute or two. Using a soft cloth, gently wipe off the build up. If your cabinets are extremely grimmy, add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to the solution.

Windows

Rather than simply cleaning down the inside, make sure to wipe smears and spots from the outside window that you do not generally have the opportunity to handle; it’s amazing the difference it makes!  TIP: Wash them on a cloudy or cooler day to guarantee that the sun will not dry up your cleanser before you even finish cleaning.

Counter tops

Sweep off any crumbs or build up before using a cleaning agent. Clean the surface of the counter top with a damp, non-abrasive cotton material and a mild liquid detergent. Rinse with clean water. Dry the surface with a new cotton cloth.

Washing Machine

It’s always washing your garments, but do you ever think about cleaning the machine itself? Add the Washing Machine to your Spring Cleaning list. Sanitize and remove ‘gunk’ build up with distilled white vinegar and baking soda to keep it like new and functioning well. Run the machine with high temperature water, at that point include the cleaning agents, and let it sit for thirty minutes to an hour. Restart your machine, drain the water, and wipe it dry.

Dishwasher

To guarantee this cleaning machine gets all the stains off your dinner plates, it needs to be cleaned as well. Start by removing any bits of food from the bottom catchment. Then, run a cycle with a specialty cleaner once a month.

Mattress

While washing your sheets and comforter, clean your mattress using your vacuum’s crevice tool to remove the dirt from the sides and surface.

Painted Walls

Maintaining your paint to look fresh is crucial. To do this, clean your walls using a sponge or cloth and water. If water alone does not work, dip the sponge into a water mixed with a little dishwashing liquid. If stains are persistent, apply soap directly on your sponge. Make sure to use plain water when rinsing the wall. And always spot test a hidden area of the wall to ensure the wall finish isn’t damaged.

Patio Furniture

Before the outside summer season starts, wipe down your chairs and tables with a blend of warm water and dishwashing liquid soap. Then rinse the soap off using a hose and let the air dry before enjoying your freshly cleaned patio furniture.

Doormats

To remove dirt from the mat inside, use a vacuum on both sides. To clean dirt off the mat from the outside, wash both sides using a hose. TIP: Prevent too much dirt from shoes entering your house by using two doormats, one thicker brush like one outside and a softer carpet like one inside.
