Organise your space this Winter

Winter- Ready Homes: 8 Tips for Canterbury Residents

Winter usually comes with more time indoors, which means a higher chance of feeling cooped up and over the clutter!  Here are some nifty ideas to help you organise your space and keep the winter blues from setting in.

1. START IN ONE PLACE

Choose one particular area of the home to begin with, whether it be the smallest area in the house or the area that guests frequent most. The organisation fails when the task becomes too large to control.

2. MAXIMISE VERTICAL SPACE

If space is minimal, take advantage of vertical space by simply working ‘upwards.’ Make the most of your walls & doors by adding in floating shelving units to provide space.

3. DIVIDE THE SPACE

Dividing space into smaller compartments allows an area for everything. Separating out space eliminates the possibility of stacking up piles of clothing, books and other household items.

4. STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Bins, baskets & canisters are perfect ways to make storage more accessible and objects easy to find.
It’s a simple way to free up space, declutter counter tops and create structure.

5. KEEP IT MOVING

Slide out organisers are excellent for simplifying your search items in hard-to-reach areas. Storage on wheels is able to hold a range of assortments, can be made to fit any space, therefore easy to tuck away in large or small areas.

6. CHOOSE

Establish which activities you want to do in each area or room, and allocate certain space for those activities. Whether it’s eating, sleeping or working, they all should take place in a different area of the home.

7. DROP ZONE

Establish a designated ‘drop zone’ area. This is where you can place those on-the-go items like backpacks, umbrellas, shoes, coats. It prevents bits and pieces getting scattered throughout the house.

8. LET IT HANG

Install hooks, whether it be to hang utensils in the kitchen or garden tools in the garage. Hanging items not only utilises space but makes things easier to find.

9.  TIE IT UP

Nothing is more frustrating than disorganised power cords. Try labelling the power cords of what device they associate with, or use fold back clips to keep cords separated and tucked away.

10. TAME CLUTTER

Placing a simple tray on top of a coffee table to store objects will not only make the room appear organised but can create a statement feature in the room.

11.  TO DO LISTS

Use clipboards to assign tasks in the house. This can assist with designating jobs around the house, important information, bills to be paid and more.

12. NUMBER SYSTEM

Create your own sorting stations, place a number associated with a family member on a basket or container. A great idea for sorting laundry, kids to place their belongings in or an alternative storage option.
