Winterproof your outdoors

Winter- Ready Homes: 8 Tips for Canterbury Residents

Now’s the time to transform cold corners into cosy outdoor rooms. Parrot Landscapes’ David Rhodes shares how to design spaces that shine in winter and wow by spring. Discover how here.

OUTDOOR ROOMS: Yes, it’s winter—but your outdoor space doesn’t have to go into hibernation. According to David Rhodes of Parrot Landscapes, now is the perfect time to create outdoor zones you’ll actually use.“We’re seeing more people invest in freestanding pergolas, louvred roofs and sliding glass enclosures to createoutdoor ‘rooms’—warm, dry spaces that feel like natural extensions of the home,” says Rhodes. “It’s a cost-effective way to expand your living area without full structural consent.”

Outdoor heating is also in high demand. “We’re regularly installing everything from sunken fire pits to cast fireplaces and modern gas fire bowls,” he says. “Most people opt for a gas bottle setup—it’s easier and more flexible than hard-plumbed systems and looks amazing when styled with a planter or feature cover.”

For the floor underfoot, composite decking remains a popular low-maintenance choice. Rhodes’ team also works with floating aluminium frame systems, porcelain paving, and crazy stonework for textured, durable finishes.

And it’s not just about structure—privacy and atmosphere matter too. “We use instant hedges from TwiningValley Nurseries—they’re grown up to two metres tall and offer immediate screening,” says Rhodes. “Add batten screens, lighting, and planting, and it becomes a space you’ll genuinely enjoy, even on the dark side of the house.”

Lighting is key. “Good outdoor lighting brings the whole space to life,” he explains. “It adds ambience, extends usability, and if planned properly, can be installed without disrupting your landscaping later.”

Rhodes always begins with a simple question: Why are you doing this?“Once we know what someone wants from their outdoor space—whether it’s entertaining, relaxing, or creating something inspired by travel—we can design something beautiful and functional.”

From concept to completion, Parrot Landscapes handles everything in-house, including VR walkthroughs, building, plumbing, planting, and more. You can meet our outdoor expert, David Rhodes plus his team, and explore Parrot Landscapes at this year’s Auckland HomeShow.
